I have been working with the Kirby Lab
since 1987 and we are currently working
on a number of projects. I am a member
of the microsurgery team whose purpose
is to supply group members with embryos
that have had neural crest ablation
performed with a low nitrogen laser.
Karen Waldo and I are looking at cell
death with ToPro in the secondary heart
field of some of these experimental and
sham operated embryos. In Mary Hudson’s
electroporation experiments where she is
altering FgF8 and BMP signaling pathways
we are working on the antibody stain for
FGF8 since identifying normal and abnormal
expression will be important.

Progress has been steady and future success
seems promising. The projects and the people
have added up to 15 years of good work for me.

Favorite data

If the lateral edges of the
anterior intestinal portal are
ablated by laser while the ventral
foregut is closing, as shown in
these images, then heart looping
is randomized suggesting that the
anterior intestinal portal carries
right-left patterning information.
The green stripes in B show the

which can also be seen at the
arrow in C.
