I do pediatric cardiac anesthesia for children with
congenital heart defects. As such, I see many
children with conotruncal or outflow malalignment
cardiac defects. In an attempt to understand the
etiology of these defects, I am currently working
on a model of outflow malalignment that is produced
in stage 16-18 chick embryos by vitelline vessel
ligation. Dextroposition of the aorta and double
outlet right ventricle can occur with this surgical
intervention. Following this surgery, I am documenting
myocardial functional changes by high speed video capture,
and anatomical heart assessment of the surgically
manipulated embryos at day 7-9 of development.
